THE “GLEN THEATER” IN WATKINS GLEN, NEW YORK.
The Glen Theater is one of the jewels of the Watkins Glen and Seneca Lake area. It is not your typical movie theater – the type you often find at malls resembling nothing more than a multi-sectioned, huge box with seats and a screen. Rather, it is a step back in time as it has recently been restored to look very much like the original theater which opened in 1924. Today, it is the only first-run, fully digital movie theater in Schuyler County with affordable prices, comfortable seating, and friendly staff. You can visit the original theater, which seats over 400, and admire the ornate architecture and antique movie posters, or you can feel like you are “on top of the world” sitting in the back row of the second theater next door, which contains 90 stadium style seats.
The exterior of the original theater has recently been restored to its turn-of-the-century motif. The interior maintains the gold and maroon color scheme but now has been lightened up by including light blue pillars, a contribution of local artists and contractors. A new marquee matches the original design with a red brick exterior exactly as it was when it opened on January 22, 1924.
